Danny O'Brien questions the abandoned former Sale police station site on York Street
Danny O'Brien, Nationals Member for Gippsland South expresses disappointment in the deteriorating former Sale police station site, calling for action on potential community uses.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien is seeking answers on why the site of the former Sale police station on York Street has been left to fall to disrepair. Mr O'Brien said it has been eight years since the opening of the new Sale police station, funded by The Nationals in government, and it is very disappointing to see the former site left in its current state.
Danny O'Brien, Nationals Member for Gippsland South, urges the Andrews Labor government to clarify the reason for the former Sale police station site's inactivity, eight years after its closure
Underutilised lakeside eyesore
Mr O'Brien said, "This site is located on Lake Guthridge and has real potential to be used for the great benefit of the community. Instead it has fallen victim to vandals and squatters resulting in an eyesore for the community and a headache for neighbouring properties."
"This is a prime location close to the centre of town and could be used for boutique hotel accommodation, a restaurant, cafe or any other number of uses for the community." Mr O'Brien said.
Action overdue for years
Mr O'Brien said he understood that there had been some issues surrounding the native title process relating to Crown land sales but that the Andrews Labor government has had more than sufficient time to work through this. "We can't just keep sitting on our hands. I have been raising this matter with the relevant Ministers and in Parliament for many years now."
"The Andrews Labor government has had eight years to sort this out and it is past time for them to get on with the job. The last thing we want is for this site to be left to remain an eyesore. Given its location it has great potential to be of good use to the local community." Mr O'Brien said.
