Latrobe Regional Hospital redevelopment underway to meet growing maternity care and training local workforce needs
Latrobe Regional Hospital undergoing major redevelopment to meet growing health needs, with focus on maternity care and training local health workforce.
The redevelopment of Latrobe Regional Hospital is well underway with contractors working hard to make sure the hospital can continue to function as the project is delivered. Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the major redevelopment would ensure the hospital meets the community's health needs for many years to come.

Health precinct expansion
Mr Chester said, "There's almost 2000 staff at LRH and I want to thank them for everything they do to care for the health needs of our community. Particularly during COVID, they worked tirelessly to keep us safe in difficult circumstances. I had the chance to inspect construction progress with hospital CEO Don McRae and it's a very impressive project."
"Over the years, the federal government has contributed to projects in the health precinct like the cancer centre and Gippsland Rotary Centenary House but this $223.5 million is funded by the state. It will result in an expanded maternity unit, and deliver three operating suites, 44 inpatient beds and 14 medical and surgery beds, along with a range of other improvements."
"There's no doubt the expansion will help meet our region's growing health needs and we will need a larger workforce too. It's great to see LRH is working closely with Federation University at Churchill to strengthen the pathway for locals to study health-related fields and work in our region. Training our own health workforce will help to retain young people in the Latrobe Valley and make sure we continue to enjoy quality services in our region," he said.
