Latrobe City Council calls government to back recovery of Traralgon Showgrounds community groups from 2021 storm and flood event
Calling on the State and Federal Governments to back a plan to help community groups based at Traralgon Recreation Reserve and Showgrounds.
Latrobe City Council is calling on the State and Federal Governments to back a multimillion-dollar plan to help community groups based at Traralgon Recreation Reserve and Showgrounds (TRR&S) rebound from the June 2021 storm and flood event that caused catastrophic damage to the popular facility.
The Traralgon Recreation Reserve and Showgrounds Masterplan intends to provide clear direction for future planning, provision and enhancement of sport and community infrastructure
Project to develop flood-proof pavillion
Council proposed a $10 million project to develop a flood-proof multi-use pavilion at TRR&S and a new community hub and events space at Glenview park at its November Ordinary Council meeting. The decision comes as many existing buildings at the reserve have been deemed to require demolition as a result of storm and flood damage. The multi-use pavilion would cater to the:
- Traralgon Football Netball Club
- Traralgon Boxing Club
- Ex Students Cricket Club
- Other potential tenants interested in utilising the spaces available
Glenview Park would be further developed to include an outdoor event space and community hub including a number of buildings for community use.
Purpose-built facility for Gippsland
These community buildings would cater for groups such as the Traralgon Men's Shed and include a purpose-built facility for Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby and Latrobe Valley Dodgeball Association. Other groups already established at Glenview Park such as the Latrobe Valley Racing Club, Traralgon Croquet Club and Ravens Equestrian Club would also be accommodated by the development.
Council has pledged $2 million for the Traralgon Flood Recovery Project and will seek state and federal funding support to reach the $10 million benchmark. Follow this link to hear from affected user groups in Council's YouTube video.
Opportunity to create better accommodation
Latrobe City Mayor Kellie O'Callaghan said, "The June storm and flood event caused major damage to the Traralgon Recreation Reserve which has significantly impacted many user groups. The extent of this damage was more extreme than anticipated, with a number of buildings beyond repair and requiring demolition."
"Council believes there is an opportunity to create new, purpose-built spaces to better accommodate all user groups and prevent future damage in the event of flooding. We are seeking assistance from the state and federal government to resource this project and support our community's ongoing recovery from the devastating June storm and flood event." Ms Callaghan said.
