Project funding

The Rail Trail is a popular destination for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders, and improving the bridge will ensure safer passage and continued promotion of health and fitness among the community for many years to come.

Council is funding the $640,000 project, with construction starting in early February. The project is expected to be completed by late April, subject to favourable weather, contractor and supplier availability and any potential COVID-19 restrictions.

Challenge to deliver the necessary works

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan said that Council recognises that every effort will be made to minimise disruptions to Trail users during the works. "It can be a challenge to deliver the necessary works and not affect the residents, businesses and Rail Trail users, especially when much of our work is determined by weather conditions," Cr Whelan said.

"The Rail Trail will be closed between the Mouth of Powlett Road car park and Station Street in Dalyston during works, to remove and replace the existing timber bridge with a precast concrete box culvert bridge. Notices outlining any closures will be placed at the Mouth of Powlett Road car park, Station Street in Dalyston and on the Rail Trail before Station Street to detour users," Cr Whelan concluded.

Traffic and pedestrian measures in place

Appropriate traffic/pedestrian measures will be in place for the duration of the works. Council understands that these works may present an inconvenience to nearby residents and appreciates their patience during these times. As always, emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
