First Nations employment experiences presented to Committee of Gippsland

At a panel on First Nations employment in Gippsland, speakers shared inspiring stories and advice on creating positive employment experiences.

In what was a captivating panel addressing First Nations employment hosted by the Committee for Gippsland, stories shared had minds ticking and emotions stirring for more than 60 participants from across Gippsland industry, in Sale last week. Both laughs were had and tears were shed in the sharing of lived experience in how life changing it can be to create positive employment experiences for First Nations people.

Panel speakers all generously shared their advice on how to make a positive difference to First Nations peoples and generations to follow. They included:

• Latrobe City's Joanne Brunt
• Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC)'s Charles Solomon
• Kinaway-The Victorian Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce's Deborah O'Reilly-Nugent
• First Nations Traffic Management's Peter O'Brien
• Latrobe Regional Hospital's Gail Mounsey
• Bonnie O'Shanassy

And also Mark Wilkins who covered a wide range of topics including creating a successful recruitment process for employing and retaining First Nations peoples, through to working with small and large teams to provide a safe cultural environment in the workplace. The stories shared were inspiring, and demonstrated how we can all commit to action towards creating opportunities.
