Controlled treated waste water releases into Tambo Bay will resume after school holidays spring 2022
Following a cessation during the school holidays, East Gippsland Water will resume controlled releases of treated wastewater into Tambo Bay next week.
The controlled releases have been necessary following significant rainfall over the past 18 months which has resulted in the on-site storage at the Metung Wastewater Treatment Plant reaching capacity. The controlled release into the wetlands will begin on Monday, 10 October. At this point it is anticipated the release will continue for several weeks, dependent on rainfall and weather conditions.

Prevent an uncontrolled overflow
A controlled release is critical to prevent an uncontrolled overflow of untreated wastewater into the surrounding environment. The wetlands are a highly effective natural filter designed to greatly reduce the level of nutrients, found in water runoff from surrounding roads and land, entering Tambo Bay.
Executive Manager Customers, Community and Engagement David Radford said an information session would be held for residents who want to learn more. "We greatly appreciate the cooperation of the local community as we work through this and would like to invite you to meet with us if you have any questions," he said.
Staff will be onsite
Mr Radford added, "Senior East Gippsland Water staff will be onsite at Tambo Bay beach from 9am to 12pm on Saturday, 15 October and available to provide any additional information that you may require. These are exceptional times and the wet weather is having a real impact on our region and our operations at a number of sites."
Further controlled releases may be necessary if weather conditions are not favourable for irrigating in coming months, resulting in our lagoon levels reaching an unacceptable level again. For further information contact the Customer, Community and Communications Team on 1800 671 841.
