By Latrobe City Council - 29th June 2001 - Back to News A celebration with a Centenary of Federation theme and a ceremonial tree planting by Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins assisted by some of the children, have marked the Carinya Early Learning Centre’s fifteenth birthday.
A number of special guests from the community were invited to join the celebrations at the Rintoull Street facility in Morwell, including dancers, footballers, Gippsland Lakers, musicians, police officers and story tellers, providing the children with some exciting special activities to celebrate the week.
In congratulating the Early Learning Centre on its fifteenth birthday, Councillor Jenkins also congratulated the centre on its growth, saying Carinya had grown from a 35 place child care centre in 1986 to a 60 place early learning centre which incorporates a preschool. In 1999 the Morwell East Preschool relocated to new premises at Carinya and 54 children now attend.
“Carinya was also recently successful in obtaining a $19,085 Minor Capital Upgrading Program grant from the Department of Family and Community Services, to have shade sails installed in the grounds,” Cr Jenkins said.
“This will enable the children to use the yard all year, providing them with increasingly important protection from the sun’s UV rays in summer. I’m sure parents and staff are excited and relieved that their efforts in securing funding for the shade-sails project have borne fruit, and I look forward on my next visit to seeing them all in place,” Cr Jenkins added.
Carinya offers care to children aged six weeks to six years. It has three years accreditation with the National Childcare Council. Further information is available from Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.
