By Latrobe City - 14th February 2003 - Back to News

‘Speaking in Tongues’, the highly acclaimed play that inspired the award-winning film ‘Lantana’, will feature at the Moe Town Hall on Wednesday 26 February.

Latrobe City’s Arts Manager, Paul Holton, said Speaking in Tongues is an intriguing, thrilling and engaging drama that Latrobe audiences should not miss.

"Four actors portray the lives of nine different characters that grow in complexity through the course of the play. The play is told in fragments in which the characters’ stories are linked by the themes of infidelity and betrayal, and the play constantly moves from present to past and back again, where the same events are viewed from the perspective of different characters," Mr Holton explained.

"This complex mystery of duplicity and deceit unfolds through an unusual set of circumstances that draws strangers together, yet creates yawning chasms in existing relationships."

Speaking in Tongues was written by Andrew Bovell and awarded the 1997 AWGIE for Best New Play. Andrew Bovell has in fact merged two of his earlier works – ‘Like Whiskey on the Breath of a Drunk You Love’ and ‘Distant Lights From Dark Places’, in order to create this award winning play.

The cast features John Diedrich (Chicago, Dead White Males), Nicki Wendt (Company), Travis McMahon (Good Guys Bad Guys) and Ulli Birvé (Something in the Air).

"This is a play that is not only resonant and challenging, but it genuinely intrigues and keeps you guessing," Mr Holton added

Bookings can be made at Latrobe City’s - Moe Citizen Service Centre, telephone 1300 367 700; or Select Music Systems, 73 Franklin Street, Traralgon, telephone 5174 2849.
