The Two TowersIt must be said that The Two Towers is a masterpiece By Ben Munro - 8th January 2003 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said
As much I as try to avoid writing a typical introduction to this review, it must be said that The Two Towers is a masterpiece. For this reason alone; the film simply has a more ‘epic’ feel to it. This film further explores the world of Tolkien’s Lord of The Rings than the first, following the fellowship in their mission. This instalment in the series has a darker, more serious tone to it, with spectacular raging battles being the main cause for this.
Although this is an excellent movie that can stand on its own, it is vitally important to have seen the first film in order to understand what everyone is stressing about. Without prior knowledge of the plot, the enjoyment value of the film would be terribly low, despite the excellent special effects.
For the unenlightened, in short, Frodo has been entrusted with destroying the One Ring in order to save Middle Earth. This is made difficult by the ever-present dark Lord Sauron, who is trying to take the ring back and obtain power once more. In this second instalment, the two armies of both Sauron and good-wizard-turned-bad Saruman are on the move, making the threat of the Ring even more pressing. While the Fellowship of The Ring had a more good-hearted fantasy feeling, the feeling of ‘impending-doom’ fantasy is even more enthralling.
The main highlight of the new film would have to be the appearance of Gollum, a computer generated creature voiced by Andy Serkis. His realtionship with Frodo and Sam and the battle within himself is key to the story line due to his past experience with the Ring. Also making a CG appearance is Tree Beard, who helps the hobbits against Saruman. The new special effects used for Gollum and TreeBeard are excellent, and can also been in the creation of massive armies and intricate, detailed battles.
Despite the drawback of the necessity of needing to know the story of its predecessor, The Two Towers is a superb movie, which creates a tense, moving atmosphere that is highly entertaining.
