GippsTAFE will be hosting a "Virtual Open Week" on GippsTAFE’s website Jan 6-17 for prospective students.

Learning Information and Support Coordinator, Helen Reeves, said that this is a first for the Institute.

"Because of the Yallourn Campus Refurbishment, the Student Services team was forced to think about what could be done for Open Week and we came up with a Virtual Open Week," said Ms Reeves.

"It is unique for us at the Institute to offer Open Week on-line, very few Institutes have explored it as a way of providing an Open Week."

The Virtual Open Week (VOW) boasts up-to-date course information, virtual tours of facilities, the opportunity to ‘chat’ on-line to GippsTAFE staff, Student Services, information for parents page, and other useful links including the Gippsland Portal and GippsRealestate.

Ms Reeves said that it is a good time of the year to have an Open Week as many people will be on holiday, browsing on the Internet and thinking about their course and study options.

"The Virtual Open Week site is user-friendly, interactive and very visual. It will appeal to younger people, but the information is equally relevant for older people looking for courses."

The site will provide many interactive activities including virtual tours, where a student takes the user step by step through what it is like for them, a virtual showbag to collect information that the user is interested in and the opportunity to ‘chat’ with GippsTAFE teachers from various departments.

"The creation of the website is a team effort between GippsTAFE’s Student Services, Media Production and Information Technology Departments.  Without the expertise and skills of these staff members, it could not have happened," said Ms Reeves.

"We are now looking at having more Open Weeks at other times during next year."

GippsTAFE Student Services Officer, Darren Teller, explained the importance of the Virtual Open Week for prospective students.

"Preparation is the key to success, and researching all of your study options is essential.  This has particular relevance to those Year 12 students that have different results to what they expected and need to review their options."

The Virtual Open Week can be reached by visiting January 6-17, 2003.  A schedule of chat sessions with teachers is available on the site.
