Monash Decision Will Hurt Industry

Close has potential to damage local industry

By Andrew Schmidt - 29th October 2002 - Back to News

Monash’s Faculty of Engineering’s decision to close down engineering at the Gippsland campus will hurt local industry according to Andrew Schmidt president of Monash University Gippsland Student Union.

"The campus provides Gippsland and regional Victoria east of Melbourne direct access to quality graduate engineers," Mr. Schmidt said.

He continued by saying,"This decision will mean a brain drain for engineers in a highly industrial-dependent community."

"This campus (Gippsland) was predominantly founded on engineering. Despite this link and the link to our community, Monash wants to gut engineering at our campus," said Mr. Schmidt.

"The region’s industry will lose vital research facilities and will have to spend more to utilise city research facilities. It will mean a drop in research and development for small engineering and industry firms. At the end of the day the Faculty of Engineering is going to do significant damage to our community by closing engineering at our campus," Mr. Schmidt said.
