Ragwort Lands Farmer In Court

A clear message to landowners regarding the need to meet their weed control responsibilities

A Foster North dairy farmer pleaded guilty on Thursday October 24, in Korumburra Magistrates’ Court, to a charge of failing to control the regionally controlled noxious weed Ragwort on his 120 hectare property. The prosecution, under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994, was undertaken by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE).

The defendant was placed on a good behaviour bond, the conditions of which require him to abide by a works agreement for the elimination of Ragwort from his property over an 18 month period. Costs of $109.00 were also awarded against the defendant.

Leongatha NRE Catchment Management Officer Bob Wilson said that the South Gippsland Local Weed Action Plans clearly spell out the community’s expectations regarding the control of noxious weeds, and their desire for increased emphasis on compliance activity by NRE.

"NRE is pleased with this outcome in that it sends a clear message to landowners regarding the need to meet their weed control responsibilities under the Catchment and Land Protection Act. NRE is committed to cracking down on landowners and managers whose lack of action on weeds continues to threaten neighbouring properties", Mr. Wilson said.
