Simple Rules Allow Safe Movement Across Shared ZonesDrivers and pedestrians will be encouraged to show courtesy and consideration in Sale’s CBD By Karen Gregory - 22nd October 2002 - Back to News
Early in November, Wellington’s Road Safety Strategy Committee will be on site in Sale Mall to demonstrate proper use of the shared zones along Raymond Street and Cunninghame Street.
Road Safety Strategy Committee Chair, Councillor Linda Barraclough, said it was important to make sure that everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities in using shared zones.
"It goes without saying that anyone driving or walking in a traffic area shared by vehicles and pedestrians should remember to use courtesy and consideration at all times, but there are some very simple basic rules relating to the use of these zones," said Councillor Barraclough.
"Traffic must comply with the 10kph speed limit and must give way at each end of the zone. Pedestrians within the zone have right of way when crossing the road and traffic must allow them to cross."
The committee has enlisted the help of Sale Traffic Operations Group and East Gippsland Community Road Safety Council to mount an education campaign in Raymond Street during the second week in November.
Traffic police and road safety council members will be on hand to show pedestrians and drivers how to make sure they follow road safety rules.
