Fun sport the solution for Australians needing to lead a more physically active life

By Howard Williams - 15th October 2002 - Back to News

Victorians will be enticed to play volleyball to highlight the need for more Australians to lead a physically active life, as part of a national event on Active Australia Day 2002.

Sporting clubs around the State will open their doors on Sunday 27 October, to encourage people to try their hand at their exciting sport.

Latrobe Valley Volleyball Association secretary, Howard Williams says it is a great opportunity for people keen to increase their activity levels and see if volleyball is for them. Come down to the Morwell Leisure Centre to see the Active Australia Day tournament and have a go on the ‘come and try’ court.

"It is also an opportunity for more clubs across Victoria to increase their club membership and support base," Mr. Williams says.

"Volleyball is an excellent sport for all ages, with current players ranging from 12 to 50+, in different grades; a growing number of juniors are entering our competition and really enjoying the sport."

"On Sunday 27 October, free coaching is provided and anyone interested only needs to bring a pair of sports shoes to be involved."

Active Australia Day 2002 national spokesperson and champion marathon runner Robert de Castella is passionate about Australians becoming more active through regular sport.

"Once you are into a routine of playing sport and doing regular exercise, you never want to go back to being inactive," he says.

"The benefits are endless, from camaraderie and socialising with team mates, to better sleep at night, less stress, higher motivation and greater ability to carry out normal day to day functions with energy."

Active Australia Day is an Australian Sports Commission initiative and forms part of the Federal Government’s sports policy ‘Backing Australia’s Sporting Ability – A More Active Australia.’ Active Australia Day is delivered by the Leisure Australia Foundation and sponsored by VIP Home Services.
