Business Growth Strategy For Sale And DistrictWellington Shire Council is taking care of business for now and the future By Karen Gregory - 30th September 2002 - Back to News Council has commissioned economic growth strategist, Buchan Communications Group, to carry out a detailed Business Opportunities Study for Sale and district.
Buchan will be looking at ways to build on current economic strengths in the region, as well as targeting opportunities for business diversity.
Wellington Mayor Malcolm Hole said that Sale currently had a sound economy based on oil and gas, agriculture, forestry, service industries and retail sectors and RAAF East Sale.
"These core industries have provided economic wealth and employment in the region for many years, but it’s time to take a fresh look at business opportunities that will help us to prosper and grow.
"If we diversify our industry base and develop new business activities, we insure ourselves against cutbacks and closures.
"Council is looking to provide choice and a competitive edge to further develop Sale and district as a major economic region."
Buchan was selected from a field of eight tenders because of its extensive experience in regional economic development across the State.
The company has established a reputation for tangible results, particularly in the Golden Plains (Bannockburn) and Central Goldfields Shires, which have since grown new industrial estates as part of their economic development strategies.
"These consultants have produced usable and effective strategies in similar situations across Victoria," said Mayor Hole.
"They will be expected to give Council and our community specific guidance and direction for immediate and medium term action for economic growth."
An essential part of the study will be to carry out extensive consultation with all business and industry sectors and the wider community.
