If you are looking for a sign to let you know whether or not to see this film, let this be it: get your ticket now. This film is phenomenal.

Written and directed by the mastermind M. N. Shymalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable), Signs will sneak up behind you in the shadows and drag you into its darkest depths.

This film tells the story of Graham Hess (Mel Gibson), a Pennsylvanian farmer and former Reverend, shattered by the loss of his wife – a tragedy that resulted in his loss of faith. Hess lives with his brother Merill (Joaquin Phoenix) and two children, Morgan (Rory Clukin) and Bo (Abigail Breslin), in a farmhouse with shadows lurking in every corner and an atmosphere advertising vacancies for a monster to go under the bed.

The fright begins with the crop circles, at first dismissed as the innovative work of a few nerds who "can’t get girlfriends". However, as the delicious plot painstakingly unravels, we see that it is not quite that simple, and the truth is much more frightening.

This story is somewhat like a car crash. We are terrified of what we may see, and yet we cannot look away. There are moments n this film, such as when the screen is divulged into darkness and our senses fill with the sound of fear without explanation, that the audience becomes so involved that they are begging to open the door, just a crack, to satisfy their biting curiosity.

A film like "Signs" dilutes the illusion that truckloads of big-budget blood and gore are necessary to elicit terror within an audience. Without even a glimpse at any of the characters innards, this is undoubtedly the scariest movie of the year, and well worth the price of your ticket. In fact, save up, because this may well be one that you will want to see again.
