GVTU Success at Drypac

Vocational Training Unit helps Drypac to hire staff with a disability

By Eimear McNelis - 16th July 2002 - Back to News

The Gippsland Vocational Training Unit (GVTU) has worked in conjunction with Drypac to encourage the hiring of staff with special needs.

The GVTU helped Bronwyn Browne and triplets Belinda, Jennifer and Caroline Clark to find work, and then ease them into the workforce at Drypac.

Drypac is an Australian company in Warragul, specialising in innovative food packaging. The company designs and manufactures unique thermoformed plastic trays, moisture absorbent pads and coolant products.

The GVTU took care of the employees needs, with a literacy and interview skills and a job search program.

"Working with the GVTU to place people into training programs was a ‘win-win’ situation. Drypac and the employees were both able to use the assistance of the GVTU to ensure a smooth transition and induction into the workforce," said Melissa Farnham from Drypac.

Ms Farnham said that working at Drypac had given the employees a boost of confidence and self esteem.

As a Registered Training Provider, all training at Drypac is conducted in-house with their custom developed training programs covering management, administration, production and fitting.

"At Drypac the employees are responsible for the quality of their work. They studied occupational health and safety, workplace communication and product knowledge. They are now familiar with over 300 sizes of trays, labelling and the products produced," said Drypac Production Manager, Renee Lawry.

"The employees gained experience on 10 different machines, working the afternoon and night shifts. They are aware of hygiene and quality issues and know how to check and fix the machines."

Ms Farnham said that when Drypac is hiring staff they will definitely work with the GVTU again.

"Drypac has established a close working relationship with the GVTU that offers support to all people equally. GVTU has a "nothing is too much trouble" ethos which has provided Drypac and our employees with an excellent service. Today Drypac has not only ended up with the right people for the right job but we now have four great success stories!"
