Computers will e-xplode onto the scene at Coronet Bay on Saturday 6 July at the launch of ‘CIC’s – Community Internet Connections. The Coronet Bay Reserve Committee’s Computer Group and Bass Coast Shire Council have installed the computer equipment for community use using a $20,000 grant from the State Government. The equipment will be available at the Coronet Bay Community Centre, Gelibrand Street, Coronet Bay.

The equipment includes an on-line terminal, two desktop computers, three printers and a scanner. The equipment is located at the Coronet Bay Community Centre, where it will be accessible to the entire community.

"For only $2 an hour, Coronet Bay people can connect to the world," said Cr John Hulley from Bass Coast Shire Council. "People can communicate with friends and family via e-mail, pay bills, organise a holiday or borrow a book or CD from the Library all via the Internet."

"The CIC is a real boost for the Coronet Bay community, " said Cr Hulley. "Very few people have a computer at home, so now they can access the Internet through a community terminal."

Cr Hulley explained that the CIC will mean that people can access government departments for information and services via the Internet.

"It will save people a lot of time and worry trying to get to Wonthaggi, Cranbourne or Melbourne for information and help," said Cr Hulley. "This has always been a real problem for many residents who don’t have a car."

People interested in using the equipment should contact the Coronet Bay Community Centre to find out when it is available and book a time. Volunteers will be available to help people learn how to use e-mail, the Internet or one of the computers.

Use of the equipment costs only $2 per hour. However, there will also be a small charge for printing.

"The charge is intended to meet the costs of paper, ink and power," explained Chris Johnson, convenor of the CIC’s Computer Group.

"The project needs to cover the ongoing costs, now that the State Government and Council have helped us get underway," he said.

Cr Hulley and Ms Susan Davies MLA, Member for Gippsland West will launch the project at lunchtime on Saturday 6 July 2002. There will be a sausage sizzle, tea and coffee will help ‘warm’ people to the idea of the Internet coming to Coronet Bay.

During the launch Mr Owen Polanski of Gippsland Computer Training sponsored by the state government’s VICNET will demonstrate how easy it is to use a terminal and surf the Internet. Owen will set up eight additional laptops in the Community Centre on the day for free practice sessions.

For more information about the CIC project and use of the equipment, contact Chris Johnson on 5678 0866 at the Coronet Bay Store.
