Hello, Beautiful! Find your inner writer with Hannie Rayson
Hannie Rayson at Latrobe Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon.
A special double header featuring one of Australia’s best-loved playwrights, Hannie Rayson, will deliver a writing workshop and a one-woman show at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon. The workshop will take place on Friday 11 May from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and the show on Saturday 12 May from 2pm.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said Hannie Rayson’s best-selling memoir Hello, Beautiful was the inspiration behind the dual events.
"The workshop is aimed at anyone who has ever said, "I tell you, the things that have happened to me – I could write a book about it." You don’t have to have any writing experience but you will need to be able to delve into your memories and your heart to find a significant event or object that takes you to a particular time in your life. Ms Rayson will then provide the easy and fun strategies to get you started and keep you writing.
"On Saturday, Ms Rayson will perform her funny, big-hearted, one-woman show, based on her best-selling memoir, Hello, Beautiful! She will take you on a journey from the East Brighton of her childhood to the treacheries of Hollywood, from share-houses in Fitzroy to the beauties of rural Australia," Cr White said.
Rayson’s life and writing has always been driven by her deep curiosity about contemporary Australian life: how we live and what matters to us – the political and ethical challenges we face. Both as a playwright and columnist for magazines and newspapers, she has an ear for the ways we speak and a knack for understanding how our inner lives affect our public selves.
Cr White added that the audience would be struck by the familiarity of some of the anecdotes in the show.
"Her gift as a storyteller is to bring the audience with her. Her tales are relatable, her style is open and honest, her show is tender and true. Come along and be inspired," Cr White concluded.
The writing workshop will take place on Friday 11 May from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre. Places are limited.
Hello, Beautiful! will be performed at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 12 May from 2pm.
