Professor Berna Collier, Australian Securities & Investment Commission (ASIC), will be guest speaker at the Faculty of Business & Economics Academic Exchange Forum on Tuesday, July 20 in the Business & Economics Conference Room at 1.15pm. Professor Collier will discuss ‘Corporate Governance and Law Reform: Current Developments and Issues’. Prior to joining ASIC, Professor Collier was Professor of Commercial Law at the Queensland University of Technology and has been involved in financial services regulation and insolvency issues, consumer protection and regional matters during her time with the Commission.

Faculty of Education Lecturers, Trent Brown and Mike Brown will be speaking at the Gippsland Campus Faculty of Education Research Seminar on Wednesday, July 21 at 9am in room 2E101. Trent will be presenting ‘Globalisation: Image, Politics and Outdoor Education and Mike will be discussing, what’s happening in Physical Education?.

Rebecca Lester, PhD student in the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering will be presenting ‘Wood to Water:habitat creation within replanted riparian land’ at the School of Applied Sciences & Engineering Research Forum on Friday, July 30 at 1pm at the Gippsland Campus.

Kurnai College will be holding an information evening on Wednesday, July 21 at Monash University Gippsland Campus from 7pm in lecture theatre 2E101. The new Gippsland Education Precinct, ‘Your Pathways Guide" CD will be launched at this event. The CD will assist students identify their pathway and courses that are available through GippsTAFE, Gippsland Group Training and Monash University Gippsland Campus.

• Making the Grade

Year 11 students from Yarram Secondary College will be visiting the Gippsland Campus on Thursday, July 22. The students will be taking part in interactive activities in the various Faculties which include a medical quiz with pull apart body parts in Nursing, Pepsi/Coke Challenge from the Marketing Department and a make your own slime session in Science. After a free lunch the students will be taken on a tour of residences.

• Open Subject

David Osborne from the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) will be speaking to Careers Advisers from Gippsland Secondary Schools on Tuesday, July 27 from 1-4pm in the Business & Economics Conference Room at the Gippsland Campus. Careers Advisers will be updated on Year 12 selection processes, how to apply through VTAC and the regionality issue of special entry.

• Around the Campus

Women’s Leadership and Advancement Scheme will begin in September 2004 with expressions of interest currently being sought from staff who would like to participate in the university-wide mentoring scheme for women. The scheme involves ‘matching’ individual women with a more experienced staff member who will offer help, advice, guidance and support to facilitate the professional development of the mentee. The following staff (male and female) are required to volunteer as mentors – Academic staff at level C and above and General staff at HEW Level 7 and above. Date for your diary – ARC Linkage Grant Seminar - Wednesday, August 4 from 12noon-2pm at the Gippsland Campus (lunch provided). Researchers are invited to an information session to be run by Gwyn Morgan, Research Co-ordinator, Research and Ethics Branch, on ARC Linkage grants. The seminar will provide academic staff with hints on how to develop proposals and how to develop relationships with industry partners. Researchers with a proven track record with ARC Linkage grants, such as A/Professor Tony Taylor will also contribute to the seminar by providing their insights, lesson learned etc. Further details on venue, rsvp address etc will be distributed in an allgippslandstaff email.

Congratulations to Vaughan Reimers (BusEco) who is now a Doctor of Philosophy. Vaughan thesis was titled ‘Retail Centre Convenience: Its Importance and Meaning’.

Commencing Monday, July 19, Spotless (new Caterers) will be operating the cafeteria from 8.45am-3pm and the Bistro from 9am-3pm. Bookings for the Private Dining Room must be booked via the Catering Manager on extn 26312. To assist staff with planning for their Christmas break, the following days have been approved for the 2004/5 closedown. The last working day for 2004 will be Wednesday, December 22 and the first working day for 2005 will be Tuesday, January 4.

At the June 2004 meeting of the University’s Occupational Health, Safety & Environment Policy Committee, the following documents were endorsed for implementation:

  • Policy for the Prevention of Bullying and Occupational Violence at Monash
  • Procedures for Managing Incidents of Bullying and Occupational Violence in the Workplace.

‘The Politics of Portraiture’ is the title of the exhibition by Masters student, Victoria Dunn at the Monash University Gippsland Campus Switchback Gallery from July12-23. The works are the result of research completed while undertaking a Master of Fine Arts at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design. Ms Dunn says of the work, "Portraiture is an important aspect of society’s articulation of itself. It verifies existence, and so doing, exemplifies social condition."

Pilates started last week but its not too late to join in the Wednesday morning routine to get your day off to a great start. Classes begin at 8am-8.50am in the Student Union Lounge and only cost $2. Latrobe City Trust invites applications from students interested in applying for the 2004 Jean Galbraith Memorial Rotary Scholarship in Botany and Conservation Biology. Applicants will have completed at least the first year of a Victorian university science-orientated degree course, including first year biology, residency in the municipality for at least two years of their secondary education and/or must be able to demonstrate a link to Latrobe City. A one day supervisor program (compulsory training) on Performance Management Schemes for General Staff will be held on August 25 (9am-5.00pm) in the Link Meeting Room. This compulsory program for supervisors of general staff HEW 5-9, focuses on the development of knowledge and expertise in the implementation and maintenance of effective performance management. General staff are invited to apply for the 2004 Caroline Chisholm and RL Martin Travelling Fellowships to undertake an identified program of professional development relevant to their position. The awards consist of paid time off work and reimbursement of expenses such as travel costs, accommodation, and conference attendance to a maximum of $6000. Applications close Monday, August 9. Students would like to thank staff who generously responded to Shirley Wright (Housing Officer) with household items to assist them during their move off-campus. It is hoped that staff will continue to contact Shirley regarding basic furniture, cutlery, crockery, kitchen appliances/utensils, saucepans etc which can either be donated or sold. Shirley Wright, Finance and Housing Officer is collecting corks to support Friends of the Zoo (FOTZ). To date $110,000 has been raised. If you would like to assist Shirley in raising funds for the Cork Recycling Project, just pop your corks in internal mail to Shirley at Community Services.
