Life Saving Works Nearly Complete On Maffra-Sale Road

Near completion of Maffra-Sale Road

By Portal Admin - 10th April 2018 - Back to News

Drivers travelling between Sale and Maffra will be much safer, as final works to improve Maffra-Sale Road are nearing completion.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing today announced final road sealing and line-marking will occur in early April, as part of Andrews Labor Government’s $5.4 million investment in boosting road safety in Gippsland.

A wide centreline has also been constructed to prevent head-on crashes, with flexible guard fences installed on the left side of the road to prevent run-off-road crashes.

Drainage on the road has also been upgraded, while the road shoulder has been sealed to create a safer roadside.

Rumble strip line-marking will be installed after the final road sealing, to alert drivers if they leave their designated lanes.

Maffra-Sale Road is being upgraded after it was identified as one of the state’s highest-risk rural roads.

Over the previous 10 years there have been 26 casualty crashes on Maffra-Sale Road involving 54 people. One person lost their life and 21 people received life-changing injuries.

Quotes attributable to the Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing

"More than half of the 28 people who died on Gippsland roads last year were in vehicles that crashed into roadside trees or poles – so we’re installing safety barriers on our high-risk routes to prevent more lives being lost."

"These upgrades have transformed Maffra-Sale Road into a safer route for all the locals, tourists and farmers that use it."
