Be part of Weedbuster Week and help save the environment

By Wellington Shire Council - 6th October 2005 - Back to News

As part of the Wellington Weed Free project, funded by the State Government’s Tackling Weeds on Private Land Initiative – Local Government Weed Management Grant Program, Wellington Shire Council will be holding a series of events during Weedbuster Week.

Join forces with communities across Australia during National Weedbuster Week, 8-16 October as they work to rid Australia’s waterways, bushland and farmlands of weeds.

Wellington Shire Council’s Weed Education Officer, Annie Lamb, said local community members were invited to take part in local Weedbuster activities being held at the Maffra and Sale shows and in Gippsland Centre Sale, focusing on agricultural and environmental weeds and garden escapees.

Weedbuster Week is an opportunity for every community group and individual to do something practical for the economy and the environment.

"Weeds cost Australia more than $4 billion every year and are one of the greatest causes of biodiversity loss."

"They reduce agricultural productivity, displace native plants and eliminate the natural habitat and food sources for native animals," Weed Education Officer, Annie Lamb, said.

There are many simple things that everyone can do to help keep our waterways, bushland and farmland free of weeds, such as removing plant material from boats, propellers and trailers before entering and leaving waterways, not dumping garden waste on roadsides or natural areas, and selecting garden plants wisely to ensure they do not become the next prickly pear.

Wellington Shire Council will have Weedbuster Week displays in partnership with Landcare and Department of Primary Industries at Gippsland Centre Sale on the 20th and 21st of October, Maffra Show on the 22nd of October and Sale Show on the 29th of October. Everyone is welcome to come along to any of these events and there will be activities and show bags for the kids.
