Liberal Party Condemns Alpine Grazing Ban

The Liberal Party condemns the Bracks Government’s decision to ban alpine cattle grazing.

By Philip Davis - 25th May 2005 - Back to News

It is a repudiation of all of the symbolic heritage traditions through which country Victoria has been contributing to our economic and social fabric, and on which Victoria’s prosperity has been built.

Labor has put entire communities and families through needless agony for more than a year, while they arrived at the conclusion, which they held right from the beginning.

They were determined to ban alpine grazing and sell-out mountain cattlemen, despite that Labor’s Environment Minister John Thwaites made a promise in Parliament in 2003 that grazing licenses would continue.

Alpine grazing occurs on only 10 per cent of the Alpine National Park, and the park exists as a consequence of the long term management by the successive generations of mountain cattlemen who have cared for and have sustained that environment.

The process by which the Bracks Government has arrived at its decision, proves that Labor doesn’t care about country Victoria.

The Bracks Government has justified its decision by establishing a committee of back-bench Labor Party hacks with no collective or individual expertise, knowledge or experience of the issues under consideration.

Labor has refused to refer the matter to a bipartisan all-Party Parliamentary Committee, which would have looked at the issues objectively.

John Thwaites’ could have made this announcement more than a year ago before establishing the farce of a Labor Party committee.

This is another Bracks Government broken promise and another blow that country Victorians will feel for many years. Their children will not know, nor have an appreciation for the activities of their forebears because the Labor decided to wipe out 170 years of tradition and heritage.

Many values, traditions and heritage symbols of country life will go down the gurgler because of Labor Party policy, changing the way of life in Victoria’s high country forever.

The Bracks Government is completely out of touch with Victoria’s rural community, which is outraged by this announcement.
