Winery Wander There’s a sweet treat on the horizon for wine palates across Gippsland By Wellington Shire Council - 22nd September 2003 - Back to News
Wellington Shire wineries have united with Wellington Shire Council to coordinate a unique "Winery Wander", each offering sample produce and organised activities to promote the fine wines of this region.
The Wellington Winery Wander will be held on Sunday October 19, from 10am till late.
Chief Executive Lyndon Webb said the concept was developed following the success of food and wine displays at the Sale Home and Leisure Show.
"We have a group of high class, boutique wineries here in Wellington, some are well established with cellar door facilities while others are relatively new businesses still trying to get their product into the market place.
"We feel this sort of fine wine promotion creates an awareness among the local community of what is produced locally, so they can stock their cellars and support our local businesses at private functions and perhaps in their workplaces.
"This is also an ideal opportunity for Cafes and Restaurants to sample our local produce and consider adding to their wine lists, or to purchase local produce for Christmas entertaining and/or gifts."
Mr Webb said the hoped the Wander would bring visitors into the Shire, to enjoy an attraction that perhaps they hadn’t associated with Wellington in the past.
"Even though we have 16 wineries operating in Wellington Shire, five with cellar door facilities, we really haven’t been widely known as a wine region," he said.
The Wellington Winery Wander creates an opportunity for a leisurely Sunday drive to visit four local wineries with cellar door facilities, sample fine wines and local produce, enjoy music and perhaps a picnic lunch at the wineries.
The wineries will offer wine samples and an opportunity to talk with winemakers, as well as providing samples of complementing local food produce such as olives and organic preserves.
Some activities also being planned by the wineries include a fly-fishing demonstration, display of sports cars, food stalls and live music.
The Wellington Winery Wander is proposed to become an annual event for Wellington Shire.
