Wulgulmerang Suffers In Fire Fury

Residents of the remote country town of Wulgulmerang in the north east of the Gippsland region have been devastated by the south eastern flank of the Bogong fire

Residents of the remote country town of Wulgulmerang in the north east of the Gippsland region have been devastated by the south eastern flank of the Bogong fire.

Unconfirmed reports from the community state that houses, sheds, vehicles, most of the buildings at the sports ground and everything at the Seldom Seen Petrol Station have been destroyed. Wulgulmerang Station has lost livestock and haysheds, but the station house is intact. Many other houses and sheds in and around the town have been lost.

The emphasis on today’s firefighting efforts have been on backburning and containment lines to secure communities and property and on extinguishing the numerous spotfires that arose from the recent intense fire activity.

Residents in the Goongerah area have been advised that spotfires are occurring in the area south east of Deddick Track and north of Bowen Track and in the area east and west of Deddick Trail north of Campbells Knob. Residents of this area maybe threatened by fire and must enact their bushfire plans and be alert for falling embers.

The Erickson skycrane is working on spotfires near Brookville in the Swifts Creek area and other aircraft are assisting in the containment of spotfires in the area.

The New Zealand firefighters are working on hand trails to protect the Cassilis Valley area and more tankers are being deployed to this area as a precaution to protect property there.

There has been significant fire activity in the Bindi/Tongio area again, which increased this afternoon but is not impacting on property at the moment. Crews are monitoring the situation here.

A reconnaissance helicopter is working in the Dargo area providing much needed intelligence to the Incident Management Team. This will assist with the strategic planning and deployment of resources to the area.
