Latrobe City celebrates International Women's Day on 8 March 2023

As part of International Women's Day, Latrobe City Council is undertaking a range of activities to celebrate women both in the community and throughout the organisation.

Latrobe City Council has gathered stories from local role models to celebrate Latrobe City women and how council is supporting women to bigger and brighter futures. Hear from Latrobe City Mayor Councillor Kellie O'Callaghan, Dr Aunty Doris Paton and Physical Activity Changemaker Kerry Wilson discuss their personal leadership journeys. Community members are encouraged to listen for free on their preferred podcast platform by searching Latrobe City Council.

Celebrating with an author talk

Council is proud to have hosted Commissioner for Gender Equality in the Public Sector, Dr Niki Vincent who attended the second International Women's Day Employee Awards. The Awards recognise the efforts of staff and their contribution to making Latrobe City Council a great place to work.

Latrobe City Libraries will celebrate with an author talk and the power of the written word. Author of Teaching Consent, Jane Gilmore will be providing an author talk via Zoom on 9 March from 6.30pm. Library branches will also display titles from the collection written by women or about women as an opportunity for visitors to consider women's stories.

Strengthening commitment

Mayor of Latrobe City, Councillor Kellie O'Callaghan was proud of the efforts being taken this International Women's Day. "There are over 39,000 women living in Latrobe, International Women's Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate their lives, contributions and achievements."

"Latrobe City Council is working to support gender equality, strengthening our commitment in recognising the rights of all people. International Women's Day highlights the importance of embracing equality all year round," said the Mayor.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.
