Latrobe Valley Tenpin Bowling Association held their first Handicap tournanament for the year and judging by the entries received for the Adult & Junior Doubles format will be looking forward to a bumper year. Thirty-six bowlers comprising eighteen Adults and eighteen juniors competed on Sunday morning over fours hours of fantastic bowling to decide the 2004 champion double combination.Last years winners Chris & Jason Stockdale got off to a slow start with Country Cup representative Neil Webb & son Peter also finding the mark hard to find. It was left to the juniors to display some great bowling with Jason Stockdale, Simon Whitehead, Kate Maniago,Brendan Hosking and Deanne Lacey bowling well above their entering averages to set the scene for the day.In the Adults Colin Murphy bowled a 201 along with Clinton Monds 212. The leaders after the first game were first time doubles partners Deanne Lacey and State Coach Joe Tomasinski who combined for a total of 471 only 21 pins ahead of Monds brother Clinton and Robert just ahead of Phyl Leslie and Kate Maniago. Going into the 2nd game of the 5 game competition young Bryce Woszczeiko decided that he was going to be like his dad and bowled 41 pins over his average to move up from 15th place into 7th place. The other big movers were Brad Treharne and James Teague who moved into second place just ahead of Robert Hillenaar and Rob Charles. The leaders Lacey & Tomasinski actually increased their lead to be 74 pins in front after only 2 games of the competition. The third game saw some really great games being bowled with Junior Brendan Hosking shooting a 193 game which was 60 pins above his average. Jenny Bosma bowling with her daughter Toni-Maree shot a 196 to move their team into from second last into the top 10 placings. Paul Hegarty bowled a 198 to follow up on his 212 which along with partner Werner Holz put them into 5th position. Clinton Monds also bowled another fine 219 and gave them 7th position.

Bill Tulau game of 210 put their team into the top 10 as well. Joe Tomasinski kept up the form to bowl a 207 along with his 313 and 246 gave him a scratch series of 684, and his partner Deanne bowled another 171 to further increase their lead by 100 pins with 2 games to go. The high game of the tournament was bowled by Neil Webb who managed the first seven strikes in a row only to leave the dreaded 10 pin on his eight shot to give Neil a 266 game. The second last game of the tournament saw several teams make a move to try and secure a top 3 finish. Hegarty and Holz moved into 2nd place with Paul shotting a 256 game to give him a total of 799 for the four games. Toni-Maree Bosma bowled 46 pins over her average to move up to 9th place with her mother Jenny. Young Brendan Hoskin threw another 40 pins over his average to move into 3rd place with his partner Steve Wallace. Lacey & Tomasinski again bowled well as a team but were only 80 pins ahead of the field going into the last game of day. Robert Charles carrying a severe blister on his foot (too much golf) bowled a 201 and his Junior partner Robert Hillenaar a 190 which secured them 3rd place just ahead of Hoskin/Wallace.Jenny Bosma also fired a 205 to move their team into 6th place just behind Tulau and Mitchell Hayes. Tomasinski & Lacey seemed to tire at the start of the last game and it took halfway thru the game for them to realise that they need to finish off well to secure top spot. Luck was with them as Holz/Hegarty also struggled along with Hoskin/Wallace. In the end Joe & Deanne won by 70 pins. High game with handicap was Paul Hegarty's 287 and Junior Robert Hillenaar 244. Scratch high game for the juniors was Brendan Hoskins 193 which was his highest game ever in his short bowling career.Megan Darby bowling in her first tournament bowled the lowest game as an Adult or Junior and was given an encouragement award to help with improving her game. Megan vowed that she would be back next year and improve her standings.

High average was taking out by Brendan Hoskin with a 173.8 from Deanne Lacey 163.4 and Robert Hillenaar 160.2.In the Adults Joe Tomasinski averaged 212.4 from Paul Hegarty 193 and Neil Webb's 192.8.
