Guest Speaker:

Senior Constable Tim Spiteri, Police Youth Officer for the Latrobe Valley will be the guest speaker at our August meeting. All residents are invited to attend this meeting.

Senior Constable Kevin McLaren the School Resource Officer gave an interesting talk at the July meeting. He is part of the Police Schools Involvement Program, which is an initiative designed to combat rising crime rates, drug and alcohol abuse by children and the alienation of police from the community.

The program is offered to primary and secondary schools and is designed to give a balanced approach to the issues of good citizenship, the consequences of crime, rights, rules and responsibilities.

The Police Schools Involvement Program has been designed to achieve set aims:

To reduce the incidence of crime in society. To develop a better relationship between police and youth in the community. To create in young people an understanding of the police role in the structure of society. To extend the concept of crime prevention into the Victorian school system. To equip young people with the necessary skills to avoid dangerous and threatening situations.

Sessions are most often classroom based learning activities. Lessons will involve modern teaching techniques such as interactive video, role-play, brainstorming, decision making, small group work and a host of others.

Scam:

A chain letter is doing the rounds. You may get one of these letters which promises you will receive a large some of money if you carry out the instructions. At the end of the letter is a list of five names numbered one to five. You are asked to send ten dollars to the person whose name is at the top of the list, then remove that name from the list and add yours to the bottom, causing all names to move up one with yours at number five. Make 200 copies of this letter which now has your name on the list, then mail them to 200 different people, who in turn it is hoped will do the same with their letters. In approximately three months you will receive at least 7,776 letters with ten dollars in each of them, giving you $77,600.

Don’t fall for this! it is a form of pyramid selling, the only people who make money from this scheme are the ones who started it in the first place.

Car Theft:

A car is stolen every four minutes in Australia which adds up to 145,000 per year, one of the highest rates of vehicle in the western world. The majority of vehicles stolen are over ten years old. Thieves target these vehicles because they generally lack effective security devices, are easy targets, and there is a ready market for their body panels and parts. These vehicles are also stolen by opportunistic thieves who use the cars for joy-riding or to commit another crime.

Fitting an engine immobiliser will deter criminals from stealing your car. Immobilisers fitted under the Immobilise Now! program are available at participating installers from $160 to $200 installed. This is good value considering the price of a replacement car.

In the last three years when it became compulsory to fit immobilisers to all new cars, and the "Immobilise Now" program was introduced, car theft in Victoria has fallen from 3,500 to 1,500 per month.
