Dairy Effluent Too Good To Waste!

Dairy effluent is a wonderful mix of water packed with nutrients, so it’s plain common sense not to waste a resource that comes for free and helps grow good grass for your cows.

You can also obtain free advice and a dairy effluent management plan, as well as access subsidised soil testing, to help you make the best use of this resource through Department of Primary Industries’ (DPI) Gippsland Nutrient Extension Team.

DPI extension officers can visit your farm and produce a plan with a range of features such as:

  1.  System designs, if you are considering upgrading or adding effluent ponds.
  2. Showing what nutrients are needed for different areas of your property.
  3. A nutrient budget to determine maintenance, and capital, levels of phosphorus, potassium and sulphur for each of the tested management areas.

Having a plan will give you the ability to make better fertiliser decisions, and offers you the potential to save money or redirect fertiliser to areas on your farm with low nutrient levels.

Effluent and nutrient management plans also come with a laminated A3 aerial photo of the actual property.

If you would like a dairy effluent management plan, please contact the Gippsland Nutrient Extension Team at DPI Ellinbank on 5624 2222 or DPI Maffra on 5147 0800.
