A superb evenings entertainment will be provided by The Police Show Band and the Highland Pipe Band. The tickets are available from your Zone Leader or ring Carmen on the phone number above. Tickets are $6.00 each, and the proceeds go to Neighbourhood Watch in Gippsland. Burglaries:There is a high rate of burglaries in our area at the moment. In some cases the burglar just walked in through an unlocked front door or climbed in through an open window. Always keep your front door locked, and close and lock all windows and deadlock all doors before leaving home. When going away for an extended period ask a neighbour to collect the junk mail and empty the letter-box. An overflowing mail-box is like a welcome sign to a burglar. Credit Card Fraud:Recently a credit card-holder received a phone call from their bank, regarding $ 10,000 of internet gambling transactions on a UK site. Someone had gambled using the card-holder’s number. These fraudulent transactions had been picked up by the bank’s fraud detection system, which had honed in on the unusual transactions charged to the card. The fraud detection system analyses millions of credit card transactions, and flags those that might be fraudulent instantly. When a suspicious transaction is detected, a fraud officer intervenes, and if the card-holder has not made the transaction, the account is blocked and a new card issued. Minimise your risk of buying a stolen vehicle:For complete protection, buy through a licensed motor vehicle dealer. It is the responsibility of the dealer to ensure there is no money owing on the car. When buying privately, beware of vehicles that are significantly underpriced for their make, model, age and condition. Many stolen vehicles are given new identities using the identification plates from written-off vehicles. Ensure that the Vehicle Identification Number, or engine and registration numbers, match those shown on the registration certificate. Check for signs of tampering (grind marks, scratches, over-stamping) with the vehicle identification plates. If you are buying a vehicle privately, it is important that you check with the Vehicles Securities Register, that the vehicle is not financially encumbered. This means that there is no money owing on the vehicle. You can get a verbal confirmation over the phone, but you must get a copy of the certificate to be protected against repossession.
