Our Neighbourhood Watch Area holds monthly meetings at the Salvation Army Hall in Bridle Road. These meetings are purposely kept short for the convenience of the residents. All residents are cordially invited to attend and will be made most welcome.

Ear Candling:

Recently ads for ear candling have been appearing in some publications. An ear candle is a narrow hollow cone that’s been soaked in beeswax and allowed to harden. The recipient of the ear candling lies on their side and someone else inserts the point of the cone inside the ear. The top of the cone is then set on fire and allowed to burn for a few minutes.

The health claim is that the flame creates warmth and suction, which draws ear wax out of the ear canal. The people carrying out this procedure have no training in caring for your ears.

This is promoted as an "Alternative" therapy and that it’s a natural way to clean your ears. A wide range of benefits are claimed. There is no medical or scientific evidence to back these claims. In fact ear candling can be very dangerous. It poses a fire risk and can cause serious burns if the hot wax drips into the ear.

The Deafness Forum is a peak consumer body for the hearing impaired, who strongly recommend that no one use ear candles, and if you are concerned about ear wax, see your GP.

Tips To Help Reduce Vehicle Theft

· Never leave keys in the ignition when the vehicle is unattended.

· Lock your car when paying for fuel.

· Close all windows, lock all doors, don’t leave valuables on view Before leaving your car unattended.

· Don't leave registration papers, drivers licence or other papers or cards in an unattended car. Paperwork found within could advise a thief that the home address of the owner may be unattended at the time.

· Don't have personal address or car registration number on tags attached to car keys.

· Don't hide spare car keys anywhere on the car.

· Don’t park overnight in the street or on the nature strip.

· Park your car in a locked garage or up the driveway as far from the street as possible, and illuminate the area.

· Never leave your vehicle with the engine running while you go into a shop even for only a couple of minutes.

Food Safety:

To keep food safe to eat, you need to keep it chilled at or below 5oC, or frozen at or below –18oC, any warmer and you significantly increase the potential for harmful bacteria growth. Measure the temperature in the fridge or freezer compartment with a thermometer, there are a number on the market that can be used. Fridge temperatures vary as the motor runs and stops, and when the door is opened. To get a more accurate reading, leave the thermometer in overnight and check it first thing in the morning.
