Beachgoers urged to take care on Cowes foreshore

Broken glass causes community concern

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 13th February 2002 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Parks and Roads team have reported finding broken glass buried in the sand on the Cowes foreshore beach during their daily clean up of the area.

On several occasions over the past month, half buried broken bottles have been removed from the area. The bottles appear to have been buried on purpose, with the jagged glass edge sticking out of the sand.

Council workers clean the Cowes foreshore beach area early every morning.

“Council is very concerned about public safety and amazed that anyone would be so callous and foolish to bury broken glass on purpose,” said Cr Miranda Sage Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.

“The police have been notified of the incidents,” she said.

Meanwhile, Cr Sage urged people to take care when using the beach.

“We are very concerned that people may suffer an injury when enjoying the beautiful foreshore area,” said Cr Sage.

“Of course, Council will keep removing any debris that we find in the area, but I urge people to wear shoes and take care when walking in the area,” she said.
