800+ On The Barry Sheene Bike Ride

The biggest ride in the history of the event was lead by V8 drivers Steve Richards, Cameron McConville, Paul Weel, Greg Murphy, Jason Richards, Rick Kelly, Todd Kelly and former Olympic swimming champion Kieran Perkins.

Leukaemia Foundation

Now in its third year, riders assembled at Bairnsdale to take part in the 300km ride to Phillip Island. A charity auction on the Wednesday night raised money for the Leukaemia Foundation, the official charity of the 2005 Polini Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Senior Sergent Ken Dunlop, in charge of Police supervision of the event, was full of praise for the day.

"It’s been magnificent", said Senior Sergent Dunlop. "This really is a fun day. I love being involved with this event.

"We had 840 riders, 90 pillion passengers and one dog registered. This year’s ride is the biggest yet."

Dog Day

Jett, the ride’s canine participant, rode with the leader bikes, complete with bike jacket and goggles. Jett’s owner Tex has been involved in the Barry Sheene Memorial Ride since its inception, travelling down from New South Wales to take part. The ride was Jett’s first long trip, the 23 week old pup being described as still "in training and a little fidgity", by proud owner Tex.

The bike ride travelled through Morwell, Leongatha and Wonthaggi, before regrouping at San Remo around 3.30pm, where refreshments were provided by the Vietnam Veterans Museum.

Riders were greeted by representatives from Bass Coast Shire Council before crossing the bridge to Phillip Island and doing a lap around the Grand Prix circuit.
