Professor Lindsay Fitzclarence, Head, Faculty of Education at the Gippsland Campus will be presenting a paper at the Visual Knowledges Conference, University of Edinburgh, Scotland this week. The paper, ‘Dirty Dancing meets Watson’s and Crick’s Theory of DNA’, discusses the use of rock musical presentations to promote science and technology in schools.

In November, the Centre for Gippsland Studies will be holding the Annual History Conference entitled ‘Archaeology and the History of Gippsland’. Local historians, archaeologists and speakers will gather at the Gippsland Campus to discuss Aboriginal and Chinese history, shipping and shipwrecks, the fishing industry, selection, social life and garden history. Dr Harry Ballis and Mr Les Hardy will present ‘Internal History and Niebur’s Typology of Social Action: The Sacred and Secular Divide Revisited’ at the Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences Research Forum on Thursday, September 18 at 1pm. Dr Ballis and Mr Hardy critique the ‘sacred and secular’ divide that is currently used in the accounting and accountability literature to explain the use of accounting techniques within religious organisations. They offer through Neibuhr’s narrative theology an example of how religious organisations have made sense of their religious convictions and the activities of the ‘world’.

Professor Sid Gray, Head of the School of Business at the University of Sydney will be guest speaker at the Faculty of Business & Economics Research Forum on Tuesday, September 16 at 1pm presenting ‘Global Accounting Standards: Research Opportunities’. Professor Gray was an executive with international companies in the UK, India and Australia prior to becoming a university lecturer. Professor Gray’s main teaching and research interests are in the areas of international accounting and multinational enterprises, international business strategy and cross-cultural management.

The Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Brian Mackenzie will be attending the graduation ceremonies of Monash University students at Kuala Lumpur and Singapore this week.

As part of the Victoria wide ‘Ride to Work Day’, Monash University Gippsland Student Union in conjunction with Bicycle Victoria are asking staff and students to dust off their bicycles and ride to work on October 8.
