Swingin’ sounds from Bacharach to wow Latrobe

By Latrobe City Council - 29th April 2005 - Back to News

For over 40 years, Burt Bacharach has been a name synonymous with sophistication, elegance and style. Now, the velvety tones of Libby O'Donovan, the evocative voice of Melissa McCaig and the mastery of Matthew Carey on piano is combined to present the timeless classics of the Bacharach songbook with their own wry twist of fun.

The hit show ‘Flat on your Bacharach’ comes to the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon on Thursday 19 May at 8pm.

Latrobe City’s Performing Arts and Venues Co-ordinator, Kathleen Roberts said that for over six decades, Burt Bacharach's music had set industry standards.

"Late in 1957 Bacharach scored his first hit with ‘The Story of My Life’ performed by Marty Robbins. This song marked the beginning of Bacharach's legendary collaboration with lyricist Hal David and was followed by another chart topper, ‘Magic Moments’ with Perry Como in 1958.

"By late 1962, Bacharach and David began working with Dionne Warwick, scoring an incredible string of 39 chart records in ten years, including ‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’, ‘Walk on By’ and ‘I Say a Little Prayer’. At the same time artists such as The Beatles, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Sandie Shaw and The Walker Brothers, were all recording chart topping hits written by the Bacharach/ David duo," Ms Roberts explained.

Ms Roberts added that Bacharach had also worked on film scores, musicals and even when the partnership with David was dissolved, Bacharach continued writing hits throughout the seventies and eighties.

"His songs have been performed by a diverse range of artists including The Carpenters, Roberta Flack, Noel Gallagher from British rock band Oasis and Elvis Costello," Ms Roberts said.

"Many of his greatest hits are performed during ‘Flat on your Bacharach’. It is a musical journey through some of pop’s finest moments. Treasures such as ‘Wishin’ and Hopin’’, ‘What the World Needs Now’ and ‘What’s New Pussycat’ are given a fresh, dynamic sound with the collaboration of O’Donovan, McCaig and Carey," Ms Roberts

"This must-see show delivers a luscious and thrilling journey through the music of this song writing genius," Ms Roberts concluded.

Tickets for ‘Flat on your Bacharach’ are available from the Latrobe City Box Office on 5176 3559.
