Dick Bishop Memorial Prize 2010 Goes To Kristen HalkettThe annual Dick Bishop Memorial Prize has been awarded to Kristen Halkett for her collection of photographic works called ‘Monument’. By Latrobe City - 10th September 2010 - Back to News Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said that the award was presented in honour of Dick Bishop who had strong connections in the Latrobe Valley arts community, and is aimed at supporting emerging artists.
"The award has been running for several years now and affords local artists the opportunity to see their work displayed in the community gallery. Dick Bishop was a passionate supporter of up and coming artists, so the prize is befitting of his philosophy," Cr O’Callaghan said.
Latrobe City Council’s acting arts director, Kathleen Roberts, explained that the exhibition explores the tourist’s response to monuments and monumental spaces throughout Italy.
"Ms Halkett describes how, as a tourist, she herself became so overwhelmed by the grandeur and history of Italy that another interest started to take precedence - that of the people. The tourists become monumental in their own right.
"‘Monument’ will be on display in the International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery until 26 September. Visitors to the exhibition will be intrigued by the images, perhaps even imagining their own response in those circumstances," Ms Roberts concluded.
Kristen Halkett is an emerging photographer from Traralgon. In 2009 she graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree, majoring in Photomedia from Monash University, Melbourne.
She has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions locally and in Melbourne; including ‘Do you Speak English? LINK SPACE’, ‘Monash University, Melbourne’ and ‘Gippsland’s Creative Waste’ at ARC Yinnar
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is open seven days a week (except public holidays) Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm; weekends 11am to 4pm; Entry is free.
