Update On Bogong (South) Complex Fire

The current mild weather conditions are providing more opportunities to build and consolidate lines around spotfires and strategically important fire fronts in the central sector of the Bogong South fire.

There were flare ups in the Ensay and Benambra areas overnight which were quickly contained.

Asset protection is still the main focus, particularly at Hotham and Dinner Plain, Benambra and Beloka.

Backburning in the Cassilis and Brookville areas continues behind private property on the Swifts Creek-Omeo Road. Backburning is also underway in the Nunniong area with patrolling and monitoring in the Swifts Creek and Bindi areas.

Containment lines north of Dargo have been strengthened overnight and further hand trail work today will improve lines. The spotfire at Matheson’s Flat, 16kms north of Dargo has breached containment lines, so more work will be done today to contain the southern spread of this fire.

Spotfires in the Snowy River National Park are slowly increasing in size, but overnight backburns and condolidation of containment lines continue to be successfully achieved.

Community meetings in East Gippsland have been extremely well attended and more phone trees are being established in the Goongerah and Tubbut areas, keeping those communities well informed about the fire situation.

Regional Fire manager David Tainsh said that the night Incident Management Team at Orbost have been concentrating on comprehensive forward planning and strategy work for the containment of the eastern sector of the fire.

"All Incident Management Teams are working hard to consolidate control lines given the onset of warmer conditions over the next few days," Mr Tainsh said.
