By Joe Tomasinski - 25th February 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe Valley Tenpin Bowling Association held their first Handicap Doubles Tournament for the year and judging by the entries received for the Adult / Junior Doubles format the committee will be looking forward to a bumper year. Thirty six bowlers comprising eighteen Adults and 18 Juniors competed last Sunday morning bowling 5 games over 4 hours of fantastic bowling to decide the 2004 champion doubles combination. Last years winners Chris & Jason Stockdale got off to a slow start with Country Cup representative Neil Webb & son Peter also finding it a bit hard in the early stages. It was left to the juniors to display some great bowling with Jason Stockdale, Simon Whitehead, Kate Maniago, Brendan Hosking and Deanne Lacey bowling well above their entering averages to set the scene for the rest of the day. In the Adults Colin Murphy bowled a 201 along with Clinton Monds 212 game. The leaders after game 1 were first time doubles partners 16 year old Deanne Lacey and State Coach Joe Tomasinski who combined for a total score of 471 only 21 pins ahead of the Monds Brothers Clinton & Robert just ahead of Phyl Leslie & Kate Maniago. Going into the second game of the 5 game competition young Bryce Woszczeiko decided that he was going to bowl like his dad and proceeded to bowl a massive 41 pins over his average to move his team from 15th to 7th place, which put a big smile on his partner mother Angela. The other big movers were Brad Trehane & James Teague who secured 2nd place just ahead of Robert Hillenaar & Rob Charles. The leaders Lacey & Tomasinskiactually increased their lead to 74 pins after only 2 games of the competition. Game 3 seemed to wake everyone as some very big scores were bowled with youngster Brendan Hosking shooting 193 game , his highest hame ever and being 60 pins over his average. Jenny Bosma bowling with her daughter Toni-Maree recorded a 196 to help move their team from second last place into the top 10 placings. Paul Hegarty showed some maturity to bowl a 198 to follow up on his previous game of 212 with his Jnr partner Werner Holz climb into 5th position. Clinton Monds also continued to bowl well posting another 219 game and 7th position. Bill Tulau a great supporter of juniors and always putting his hand up to bowl in these events bowled a 210 to give his team a chance. Joe Tomasinski in great form all day finish with 207 game adding to his previous games of 231 & 246 gave Joe a scratch series of 684, with his partner Deanne bowling well above her averagethe pair further increased their lead in the tournament to 100 pins with 2 games to go. The high game of the tournament was bowled by Neil Webb, using a brand new bowling ball which had only just been drilled that week Neil started off with the first seven strikes in a row and looked to have the 8th strike in the bag when he bowled it perfectly in the pocket to leave a tenpin standing, and a large crowd shaking their heads in disabelieve as they were sure that they were going to see that magic 300 game bowled.Neil finish with a 266 and moved into the top 5 position with his son peter. The second last game of the event saw several teams make some big moves to get into the top 3 medal placings. Heharty and Holz jumped into 2nd place as Paul posted a 256 game, obviously motivated by Neil's previous game. Toni-Maree Bosma bowled 46 pins over her average to move their team back into 9th place and a chance for the Medals.Young Brendan Hoskin continued to bowl well and with partner Steve Wallace took over 3rd spot. Deanne & Joe could not do anything wrong and continued to hold first place still 80 pins in the lead with 1 game to be bowled. Rob Charles carrying a severe blister on his foot(too much golf) came up with a 201 game to compliment his junior partner Robert Hillenaar's 190 to move them into 2nd place.Jenny Bosma also was fired up and bowled a great 205 game to move their team into 6th place just behind Tulau & Mitchell Hayes.Lacey & Tomasinski seemed to tire as the first half of the last game was pretty ordinary for a team with such a large lead.As luck would have it second and third team also struggled which left top team in front by 70 pins a very comfortable margin in any tournament. High Game scratch: Neil Webb 266 High Series scratch Joe Tomasinski 1062 tournament average of 212
