Ron Reed to talk about Maffra Football Club historyBy Wellington Shire Council - 30th September 2005 - Back to News Maffra Football Club is embedded firmly in Gippsland’s football history spanning from the 1880s until the present day. In celebration of the club’s history, former Maffra footballer Ron Reed will be hosting a talk at the Maffra Library on Tuesday 4th October at 1:30pm.
Mr Reed said: "The talk will cover the history of the Maffra Football club as well as some of the things we found out about the club along the way."
Mr Reed played on the wing for Maffra from1964 until 1972 and has been involved with the Maffra Football Committee since.
He said he was approached at last year’s Grand Final by Bill Traill who wrote the history of the club up until 1960.
"Bill asked if I would be interested in documenting the history of the club from 1960 to the present."
Mr Reed said his contribution to the club’s history was now well underway.
The Maffra Football Club began in the 1880s and was a Champion Team in the 1920s winning three premierships.
The club joined the Latrobe Valley League in 1960 and has been victorious in another three premiership wins since then.
Wellington CEO Lyndon Webb said: "Mr Reed’s talk will be a great opportunity for people to hear about the history and traditions of one of Gippsland’s premier football clubs and I strongly encourage members of the community to attend and learn about a significant part of our sporting heritage."
