Susan is a renowned artist in her field of photography who resides in Gippsland and lectures at Monash University Art & Design, Gippsland. She has exhibited widely and has been the recipient of a number of Australia Council and Arts Victoria Grants.
Susan uses an old and essentially European photographic medium called ‘photogenic drawing’ or photograms; the process involves arranging objects on photographic paper and exposing the paper to light. The resulting prints have a dark background and silhouette of the objects in white. Susan has added to the technique by recording the shadow of transparent objects giving greater dimension into previously dense silhouettes. The subject matter is sourced in three distinctly Taiwanese cultural spheres: high culture, popular culture and mass culture.
On Susans work, Kevin Murray writer and director of Craft Victoria wrote, " In her photograms, Susan Purdy has created a space where things exist in the shadow of their immanence. Their meaning is not contained in a spatial system of vertical and horizontal measures. Their beauty is accidental, like flotsam. And we are left below, gazing up to the China that lies above us.
