Fashion Prepares for 2003

Great success ensures next year will be a perfect fit

By Eimear Mc Nelis - 15th October 2002 - Back to News

GippsTAFE’s Fashion, Clothing and Textiles Department will soon be taking enrolments for next years fashion courses after the success of its 2002 staff and students.

"We have graduate students working in London, two are working in the fashion industry in Melbourne as designers and some have gone on to be Production Managers, Milliners and Retail Managers," said Kath Medew, Coordinator of the Fashion Department.

Mrs Medew said that the students study Certificate I to IV levels and are at their busiest from June to November.

"The Millinery students will be displaying some of their work at the Moe Cup and other students are getting their garments ready for our upcoming GippsTAFE Fashion Parade in November," said Ms Medew.

"Students will have all the work they have done for the year paraded to the community."

Ms Medew said that the students also enter competitions right through the year as part of their class work. Such competitions include the Gippsland Wool and Fibre Awards, Textiles Institute Student Design Competition and the Fashion Future Designers Award.

The Fashion Department is also branching out into other areas of fashion.

"We are offering our first ever shoemaking course and with the introduction of VCAL and the Yea Program we have an exciting year ahead of us to look forward to."

Ms Medew is also looking forward to having international students in her classes next year.

"It will bring a variety of culture into the class and students will be working together to produce garments with an international flavour."

GippsTAFE’s Fashion, Clothing and Textiles Department offers Certificate I to IV in Headwear/Millinery, Certificate I to IV in Clothing Production, and Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Textiles, Clothing and Footwear.

The Fashion Department has the latest computer design technology which is recognised world wide by employers.
