Wellington’s favourite place revealed

By Wellington Shire Council - 2nd September 2004 - Back to News

Wellington Shire Council is pleased to announce the Australian Alps Walking Track in the Alpine National Park as its favourite place as voted by residents in the Building Commission of Victoria’s Year of the Built Environment 2004 My Favourite Place competition.

The Alpine National Park is situated in the shire’s high country and offers a range of outdoor activities including camping, bushwalking and four-wheel driving.

Members of the Maffra community teamed up with residents from Dargo and surrounds to vote for the park which is rich in cultural heritage and home to native grasslands, woodlands and many native animals.

To be eligible for the competition, a nominated favourite place needed to be man-made or modified by people and could include buildings, roads, parks and gardens, public art, walking tracks, bridges or jetties.

Other favourite Wellington places to receive nominations include Port Albert, Loch Sport and the Honeysuckles at Seaspray.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "This competition has been a great opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic spots we have within our shire. The Alpine National Park and our coastal towns are instrumental in attracting tourists to Wellington and offer residents the chance to ‘get away’ without leaving their shire."
