The Family and Small Business Research Unit received a $100,000 grant for research in 2004/2005 into small business job creation/employer and employee perspectives of job quality. The School of Nursing at the Gippsland Campus took their first cohort of double degree students on a rural health tour of Gippsland last week. The 27 Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Rural Health Practice students went to the School of Rural Health at Latrobe Regional Hospital, were given an overview of life as a Rural Community Health Nurse at Rawson, and then on to Leongatha Hospital where Monash Gippsland fourth year double degree students spoke about their experiences. • Making the GradeFive new students starting at Monash University Gippsland Campus kicked off their academic careers by receiving prestigious Gippsland Internship awards last Monday, February 23. Alice Ryan (Lowanna College), Alicia Cruickshank and Robert Meall (Trafalgar High), Liam Cox (South Gippsland Secondary) and Cara van Megchelen (Frankston High) were each presented with certificates from Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Brian Mackenzie and book vouchers from their respective employers. The Gippsland Internship Program links high achieving students with local employers. As well as paid employment in their chosen field for the term of their degree, they also receive $1000 per year for books. The School of Applied Science & Engineering, 2004 VCE Instrumental Analysis Workshop was held last week with 250 Year 12 Chemistry students participating from Secondary Schools all over Gippsland. The students undertook a range of analytical experiments, designed to complement the Year 12 curriculum with equipment which is not available to secondary schools. All the experiments are designed as a "hands-on" experience and under supervision the students themselves run the experiments, operate the instruments and analyse the results they obtain. • Open subjectFor students returning to study at the Gippsland Campus next week it won’t be all lectures and study time. The Student Union is hosting a full program of activities including a comedy feast on Tuesday night with the talents of Drew Rokos, Dave Grant, Peter Grace and Christine Basil then high profile band ‘Machine Gun Fellatio’ on Wednesday evening. Students will also be served up free breakfasts and lunches throughout the week.
