Big Love For Tough Mudder

Tough Mudder

Tough Mudder

There has been a massive response to the inaugural Tough Mudder event at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on 31 March and 1 April.

Tough Mudder is extreme human endurance event which originated in the United States where it is becoming increasingly popular. The event on Phillip Island is the first in Australia. With a daily maximum capacity of 15,000 participants, Saturday’s event is already fully booked with the figures for Sunday currently at around 50 per cent.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Manager, Steven Piasente, said the organisers had put a management plan in place, to deal with the expected traffic.

"The popularity of the event means up to 10,000 vehicles will access the circuit on Saturday and potentially 5,000 on the Sunday," explained Mr Piasente.

"Our staff are working closely with the Circuit to make sure this doesn’t have too big an impact on the community and regular traffic on the Island, but we do expect heavy traffic on Phillip Island Road across the weekend. The peak times for event traffic will be up until lunch on Saturday and Sunday, as the competitors and spectators make their way to the track. We advise other motorists to avoid the area around the Circuit, particularly Back Beach Road, Gap Road and Berry’s Beach Road."

Traffic management for the event includes:
• Two new entrances into the Circuit parking areas
• Gap Road only open for local access and emergency vehicles (no event patrons)
• Event patrons travelling from the Circuit to Cowes will be directed via Berry’s Beach Road
• Police will control the intersection of Phillip Island and Back Beach Roads during the exit phase each day

The response to the Tough Mudder event has seen a strong demand for local accommodation, another welcome boost to the local tourism sector. The Social and Economic Value of Events study released last year shows that events bring nearly $130 million of benefits to Bass Coast each year.
