Fire Safety In The Home:Sadly, every winter Victoria experiences an excessive number of preventable deaths in house fires every year. It is timely to remind everyone of the danger a fire in your home can pose to you and your loved ones. Nobody thinks they will have a fire in their own home, "that happens to someone else, not me". Unfortunately, many people suffer the consequences of a fire in their home everyday. At many house fires CFA fire fighters have found no working smoke alarms, so the residents have not had an early warning before the fire is out of control and no time to escape. In other cases people have been found by deadlocked doors and security windows unable to find the key and use the door to escape safely. As well as having good fire safety practises to prevent fires from occurring, you must have working smoke alarms to give you and your family an early warning of a fire and be able to escape your home safely without being held up by security measures. What simple steps can you take to keep you and your family safe? Smoke Alarms:¨ Test the smoke alarms each week by pressing the test button, use a broom handle if it is hard to reach. ¨ Vacuum the alarms monthly to clean the vents. ¨ Replace the battery in your smoke alarms yearly. The CFA recommends that you "Change Your Clock Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery" at the end of daylight saving. Security Devices: ¨ Install deadlocks that can be opened from the inside without keys. ¨ Where a key is needed to open the door leave the key in the lock. ¨ Ensure that any window security grilles and screens open easily outwards from the inside. Fire Escape Plan:Develop a home escape plan with your family. Practise your plan Theft From Cars:Recently there has been an increase in thefts from cars. Mobile phones, iPods, Satellite Navigation Systems should all be removed before leaving the vehicle. The sight of these objects is a great incentive for a thief to break in. Always lock your car before leaving it. Australians drink about 400 million litres of fruit juice a year, that’s 100 glasses each or 160 Olympic sized swimming pools. But no matter how much you drink you don’t get the same nutritional benefits from juice as whole fruit. When juice is extracted from the whole fruit the processing reduces the fibre content and releases fructose, a sugar that can damage teeth, especially if you drink fruit juices frequently. If you are watching your weight keep in mind that a glass of juice (200mL) gives you more flab forming kilojoules than a beer or a can of regular Coke.
