Citizenship ceremony

29 people became Australian citizens at Bass Coast Shire Council’s Citizenship Ceremony on Tuesday 23 October 2007.

The Council Chamber in Wonthaggi was packed with friends and relatives on hand to witness the ceremony. The crowd was welcomed by Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, Russell Broadbent MP and Edward O’Donohue MLC.

Cr Goodwin warmly welcomed the new Australian citizens, noting that countries from across the globe were represented at the ceremony.

"We have people here today from Nigeria, Mauritius, India, United Kingdom, South Africa, Sudan, New Zealand and Ireland," said Cr Goodwin.

"And we welcome them into our diverse and wonderful community."

Cr Goodwin also commented that some of the new citizens have lived in Australia for over 20 years, with others arriving as recently as three years ago. But all had chosen to make their home in Bass Coast, including Inverloch, Wonthaggi, Rhyll, San Remo, Cape Woolamai and Cowes.
