Senior Sergeant Ricky Ross addressed the April meeting and gave the following report on our NHW Area LTB1 over the past twelve months.
NHW — Area LTB1,
Report from Senior Sergeant Ricky Ross,
Officer in Charge,
Morwell Police Station.
"It is my pleasure to offer this report to LTB1 — NHW. Firstly, I thank everyone for the continued commitment to Neighbourhood Watch. I take the opportunity to update you on the following issues."
The Morwell Police Station has continued to increase its responsibilities. The Station is committed to the Latrobe Police Service Area Action Plan. The key areas we are looking at in 2007/2008 are Road Trauma Reduction and Road Policing, Public Order, Assaults, Property Damage, Residential Burglary and the recent hot issue of Theft of Motor cars. Priorities relate to Prevention, Intelligence and Enforcement.
Hoons:
A number of hoon drivers posing danger to other drivers and residents have been apprehended and cars seized in the LTB1 Area, this involves speeding and spinning wheels. Please do not hesitate to report any hoon driving to police on 000.
Public Order Offences:
Police have been called several times to anti-social disturbances in a few streets in LTB1. This behaviour appears to be alcohol related with residents being disturbed with loud and abusive language, including fighting. This behaviour is not acceptable, and I encourage you to report these disturbances to the police on 000.
Crime Statistics:
Overall crime in Morwell compared to last year has dropped.
Robbery and Assaults down 20%,
Property Damage down 8%,
Aggravated Burglary down 34%,
Other Burglary down 26%,
Theft from a Motor Car down 22%,
Theft of Push Bikes down 21%,
Theft of Motor Cars up 41%, 78 reported thefts compared to 55 last year.
This time last year we had almost 200 reported shop thefts, it is pleasing to see that these offences have almost been cut in half.
Binge Drinking:
Clear evidence is emerging regarding a growing culture of binge drinking and associated behaviour. Recently this has become a National issue and already plans are being designed by Victoria police to tackle this problem.
Conclusion:
Policing must remain a community issue and working together with all key agencies and groups is critical to enhancing community safety.
A Warning From The Queensland Police:
Two men have been approaching women in shopping centre car parks. The women are asked what perfume they are wearing, and are offered samples of a new perfume that they are attempting to sell. The men are not selling perfume but incapacitating the women with ether. The obvious result of this is whilst they are unconscious they can become the victim of theft or assault.
Although this has been happening in Queensland, be extremely wary or better still avoid someone trying to sell anything from the back of a car, or just walking up to you in a shopping centre car park.
