Scams Target You:
Protect Your Money — Remember the golden rule "If it sounds too good to be true it probably is".
Þ Never use your bank account to transfer money to someone you don’t know.
Þ Keep your credit card and ATM cards safe. Do not share your personal identification number (PIN) with anyone.
Þ Do not keep any written copy of your PIN with the card.
Þ If someone offers you an investment or other financial service ask for their Australian Financial Services Licence number. Then check this with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission at www.fido.gov.au or call 1300 300 630.
Þ Your bank will never ask for your details in an email, so never send your personal, credit card, or online account details by email.
Þ Never click on a link or open an attachment in any unexpected email — even if it looks like it comes from your bank, credit union, financial institution or any other company.
Þ Do not let anyone pressure you into making decisions about money or investments, always get independent financial advise.
Þ Beware of investments promising a high return with little of no risk.
Þ You should never have to pay money to claim a lottery prize. You cannot win a lottery you did not enter.
SCAMS TARGET YOU. To find out more about scams and to report scams visit www.scamwatch.gov.au or call 1300 795 995. TTY Call 1300 303 609.
USE OF THE INTERNET. Parental supervision is crucial when children are using the internet. You wouldn’t leave your child alone in the real world, so don’t do it in the virtual world. Keep in mind that in some countries, a fourteen year old is considered an adult. For further information visit: www.safekids.com or www.netparenting.com
Operation Goodwill, Public Safety Issues:
In the next few weeks you will notice an increased presence of police on foot in the central business district of Morwell. This will provide an opportunity to speak to police in their efforts to develop safe strategies for everyone.
Car Safety:
Never leave your car unlocked and un-attended when paying for fuel. There has been a spate of car thefts in Melbourne when the driver leaves the vehicle un-locked with keys in the ignition while paying for the fuel.
Police believe a gang may be involved that lurk around busy petrol stations stealing the cars of unmindful motorists.
