EXPERTS ALERTED TO BASS COAST DESAL ISSUES

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, has raised the issue of desalination with world renowned Australian scientist, Professor Tim Flannery.

Mr Bawden raised the issue at the "Our Planet" forum at Docklands last week.

"As desalination is a very energy intensive process, its greenhouse gas emissions would have a big impact on the environment," said Mr Bawden.

Mr Bawden directed his question to the 2007 Australian of the Year, Mr Flannery, who was speaking at a session about reducing pressure on our ecosystems.

"Mr Flannery said that he thought desalination was a last resort," said Mr Bawden.

"It was a great opportunity to draw his attention to our situation."

The issue of desalination was also addressed at a later session, dedicated to "Preserving our most precious resource - water."

"The panel were certainly aware that desalination was an issue in Victoria at the moment and they actually brought it up themselves, before the question session," said Mr Bawden.

A letter and information on the desalination project proposed for Bass Coast was prepared for the key note speaker, The Hon Al Gore. Unfortunately, Mr Bawden wasn’t able to present it to the former US Vice President.

1910 FOOTBALL MATCH PHOTO INTRIGUES SHIRE

Bass Coast Shire Council is calling for community help to identify what happened in a 1910 photo at a Ryanston versus Dalyston football match.

The photo says "A vexed umpire leaves the field".

Council’s Arts Officer, Josephine Kent, said there are many photos being written about by community members for Volume 3 of the booklet Celebrating Our Sporting Past.

"But this photo is particularly intriguing, and as yet, no-one has come forward with the story behind it."

Ms Kent said she is hoping someone may like to write about the story in the photo, or pass the information on to a writer who could.

"All sorts of photos from our collection are being written about for this year’s booklet.

"All the writing is of course factual, not fictional. But people can write in any way they like, such as a poem, short story or essay.

If you can help identify the photo, or you would like to contribute to this volume of Celebrating Our Sporting Past, contact Council’s Arts Officer, Josephine Kent. You can phone on 1300 BCOAST (1300 226 278) for the cost of a standard local call, or email j.kent@basscoast.vic.gov.au
