Overflowing Bins Won’t Be Collected! An alarming increase in the number of overflowing bins being placed for collection has been reported to Council. By South Gippsland Shire Council - 14th October 2004 - Back to News Cleanaway Pty Ltd, the contractors who provide the kerbside garbage and recycling collection services, are not obliged to collect any bins that do not have a closed lid.
"If your bin is continually overflowing, it might be time to review your recycling and purchasing practices to reduce the bulk," said Geoff McKinnon, Council’s Waste Management Coordinator. "There is a guide to what can go in the Recycling bin under its lid, and the brochure with more details is available on Council’s website www.sgsc.vic.gov.au or from Council."
Geoff also reminded residents that excess recyclables can be left at the transfer stations free of charge eg. after a party when bottles may have mounted up.
Another trend that has developed in some commercial precincts is for business owners to leave their bins in public areas with lids opened, or to place them for collection early on the day before the collection is due. These practices are both unsightly and create the potential for odours and flies. Business owners are asked to keep the lids of their bins closed at all times and to ensure that bins are not placed for collection prior to 5pm on the day before collection.
Tips to reduce your waste include:
- Use your cloth bags and baskets when shopping
- Start a compost heap for your vegetable peelings
- Use newspapers and flattened cardboard under mulch to reduce your water usage on the garden in summer.
- Consider cordials for the kids to reduce the number of soft drink bottles
- Purchase products with the least amount of packaging
"It’s great that people have taken to recycling but it’s even better if we can reduce the amount of packaging in the first place." added Geoff. " For example, plastic bags cannot go in the recycle bin, so invest in some of the green cloth bags and keep them on the front seat of your car so that you don’t forget to take them with you when you go shopping."
